The remaining members of Magnolia Electric Co. and Will Johnson convened in 2025 to record and play shows as Magnolia & Johnson Electric Co., performing favorites and pulling deep cuts from the extensive Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. discography, all penned by singular songwriter Jason Molina.

Will Johnson wrote and recorded with Molina on the 2009 collaborative album Molina & Johnson. Johnson is best known for his work fronting influential alt-country band Centro-matic, as well as a string of thoughtful solo albums (the most recent being 2025’s Diamond City). He is also currently a member of Jason Isbell’s band The 400 Unit.

Magnolia & Johnson Electric Co. debuted in September 2025, playing four shows in Texas, which these live recordings are curated from.

They offer stunning tributes to their dear friend Jason Molina, sharing his music with new generations of music listeners and helping these songs to live on.

“There were moments where it felt as if Molina was singing through him, as on the stirring ‘Hold On Magnolia,’ and the ‘long dark blues’ refrain of ‘Farewell Transmission.’ And there were others where Johnson and company clearly made the songs their very own. . . . The group’s harmonizing on ‘Just Be Simple’ elevated the song — as beautiful as it is in its recorded forms — to its fullest emotional sonority.”

— Erin Osmon, author of Jason Molina, Riding with the Ghost
