Magistra is the second dungeon synth foray by Domesticatrix. This album is, much like its predecessor ‘Maiden’ (Fiadh Productions, 2024), is inspired by FM Soundblaster soundtracks of early 1990’s fantasy PC games, but with hints of industrial, noise, and dark ambient. Magistra channels a more focused vision than ‘Maiden’.
Side A is almost solely composed of FM contributions from a Yamaha DX7, and Side B is almost solely composed of multi-layered performances from a Korg Minilogue. Side A also includes two covers, ‘Can’t Remove The Pain’ (Boot) and ‘Fall Leaves’ (Intro) both from Ultima VI, rendered on a Yamaha DX7.
The album follows familiar themes of classic dungeon crawlers and time spent with friends around a table, and combines those visions into a cohesive journey for the listener, from the rebuilding of medieval societies after plagues, all the way to battles against vexing foes. Magistra is here to strike command, but only if you are here to heed her call.
