I’ve made a few old time albums with various bands, but for a while now, I’ve been thinking it would be fun to make a fiddle album that leans more to the bluegrass side of things while still honoring my old time roots.\n\nIn early 2025 I was lucky to receive a competitive grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, so I could finally make it happen. I reached out to some friends, powerhouse pickers Conner Vlietstra, Reed Stutz, Trevor Holder, and Rina Rossi, to back me up. With their help we cut 15 tracks of old time bluegrass fiddling, drawing inspiration from influences like Arthur Smith, Jim Shumate, Tommy Magness, and others, plus one original tune that I added to the collection. \n\nI’ve always been drawn to old time and bluegrass music for its raw energy and excitement, something that is especially evident in older recordings. I wanted to cut this record in a way that allowed that energy to come through, both in the studio and on the record. I called up my favorite engineer Tom Herbers, borrowed an old RCA 44 microphone, and we gathered around it and recorded the whole record live into one microphone running straight to tape. Rather than try to make something perfect, I wanted to share the rawness that I love about this music, to capture the essence of that rough and rowdy feel.\n\nI’m so grateful to Common Loon Records for taking this project on, and I'm excited for you to hear it.
